Three Dog Night had an amazingly bright 70s sound, with tenor harmonies, incredible energy (better living through chemistry perhaps?), great songwriting and arranging, rich Hammond organ and those wonderful Leslie Speaker Systems, musical, polished wood carpentry which spun sounds all over the place in a three-dimensional, full-immersion, heaven-like experience. Plain guitar, horse-kickin' drums, and memorable sing-along party songs.

This live performance of "Mama Told Me Not To Come" is a true classic, replete with spooky guitar sound effects and video fog...the verses are dreamlike, but the refrain pops out like a fast left-hook, in a solid, tight wall of wailing harmony.

Enjoy it. The video's every superb, and is truly representative of this prolific group of performers who graced a fabulously rich and revolutionary musical era. Then again, they also performed "Joy to the World," but we won't talk about that here...

"Do You Wanna Funk?" - Yes You Do!

Native American riffs rolled into a fabulous, high-energy disco celebration. Sylvester. Remember the old movie "Trading Places"? This was Eddie Murphy's housewarming party -- crammed full to the sweat level with wacky friends celebrating wild, disco bell-infused, synth-laden FUNK, and Eddie's new-found wealth. Huh!

I loved the song well before I had ever seen the movie. It lit the pilot light inside me. And those clattering disco bells -- I can only guess, but I don't think that there's any drug that can get you as high as wonderful music.

I still feel a bit taken aback about the song, and this whole "Sylvester" thing. I actually had thought that the name of this unforgettable heartpumper was "Do You Want To Bump?" It had always sounded that way to me... Fact is, it is natural music to do the bump to. I was at a disco on Long Island's south shore when I was in my 20s, and I remember coming home to my apartment with my hips black and blue (I was a bit skinny and didn't have the right padding to play the game), and aching from head to toe [but smiling] after bumping with a whole crowd of other dancing fools for over a half hour. The DJ played a super-set of the song, and we just could not stop.

It took me almost until the next night to recover - I was awfully resilient back then.

Livin' It Up (Friday Night) - Bell And James

This immortal Bell and James slice of disco-soul goes out to every single hard-working (but tired and bored-to-death) salve who lives through the week just to get to Friday night -- when "Livin' It Up" meant going to dance clubs and having a psychedelic experience without real drugs -- this psychodiscomanic trip was a combination of ingredients: flashing disco lights; body heat and motion all around; a heady mix of perfumes, aftershaves, hairsprays and mouthwash... but mostly it was due to the glory of getting out of the cubicle, the cage, the conformist suit, and into your "anything's possible" superhero persona.

The whispered echos and other "special effects" give this song an undertone of a spy thriller.

The pheromones were flying as we were bumping and boogieing to this crazed liberation celebration, when we could finally fire our cannons and make some memories.

"Must Be The Music" - Secret Weapon! - Boogie Shoes Material

Early 1980's classic disco (with loads of bells, congas, synth, snappy electric bass, multiple voice overlays and even some counterpoint vocals, to boot). Performed by Secret Weapon, "Must Be The Music" represents the best of the crossover sound as dance floor disco evolved into unadorned, brash disco.

The song is a classic in every sense -- it captured funky disco in its "early rapper" essence, and at its height. Those disco bells were an ever-present component of the disco sound -- they were subtle, but added a rhythmic complexity and detail that caught you at every level.

I did, by the way, have bell bottoms -- but I did not (DID NOT!) wear polyester.

"I Can't Break Away" - Big Pig Cries To Demonic Entities - I'm Scared...

Listen to this demonic march and enjoy the crack of the whip. They also sing some incantation in a language which is totally unfamiliar to me. It makes DAZZ shiver. The song, "I Can't Break Away" was performed in the transitional 1980's by the group Big Pig. It will absolutely give you chills. It's from the Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Soundtrack, at the opening credits.

USELESS FACTOIDS ABOUT THE GROUP!

The Australian group Big Pig made a memorable first impression in 1988 with the belligerent percussion and incendiary vocals of their only U.S. hit, "Breakaway." Big Pig was noted for their fashion sense as well, wearing leather aprons that gave them a unique look. Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1986, Big Pig was comprised of Oleh Witer (vocals, percussion), Sherine Abeyratne (vocals, percussion), Tony Antonaides (vocals, harmonica), Tim Rosewarne (vocals, keyboards), Neil Baker (drums), Adrian Scaglione (drums), and Nick Disbray (vocals, percussion). A wonderful live performance by Stephen Bishop, with a full, rich accompaniment. The song's theme is the immalleable constant of a fool's romance: "Love Don't Love Nobody." It's simple, graceful with a tropical feel, enhanced by some wonderful pedal steel guitar work that was never truly enunciated on the Top 40's single.

Break The Office Routine - Today!

This is what we musical types (and media production types) call either "break music," an "intro," or an "outro," which last term sounds imbecilic, but they still use it. We should all sign a petition.

This instrumental is one of the most upbeat, adrenalin-pumping', get-up-and-get-to-it pieces of music which I've ever heard. It is aptly named "The Horse," and it has the distinction of containing one of my favorite guitar licks since the guitar evolved from the lute. If you ever have money to bet, I'll play it for you.

I'll offer you a challenge. Here's what you should do. If you work in a large office or factory, especially if you either punch the clock or work for an anal-retentive slavedriver, crank up your speakers and play this song at the beginning of the day, at breaktime, and at "quittin' time. People may roll their eyes at you, but they will be cheering inside. You may even catch a few stray, grins, and a suppressed laugh or two (you know, the kind where your target, puts his or her lips tightly together, looks down, and emits a sound either like a helium balloon being aired, or like they are stifling a sneeze). I dare you.

The Sixties were wonderful, but the Vietnam War still haunts many. These are some comments posted to YouTube at the end of this song...I was very young, and at the time, I didn't really understand what the war was about. When I was 17, it was the last year of the draft lottery -- I was number 362. A friend of mine (an ardent patriot as well) drew number 7; he went to Vietnam and never returned - he died there, and for years and years after that happened, his family could not get any straight answers from the U.S. Government about the circumstances surrounding his death. The war was just about over, too. R.I.P. Charlie C.

The Turtles had hit after hit through the mid to late 1960's (including "Happy Together," "You Know She'd Rather Be With Me" and many others -- each one a perfect rock single). Some years later the creative nucleus of the group resurrected itself as "The Phlorescent Leech And Eddie," later nicknamed "Flo n' Eddie," and toured with Frank Zappa.

"Though many remember only their 1967 hit, "Happy Together," the Turtles were one of the more enjoyable American pop groups of the '60s, moving from folk-rock inspired by the Byrds to a sparkling fusion of Zombies-inspired chamber pop and straight-ahead, good-time pop reminiscent of the Lovin' Spoonful, the whole infused with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of dual frontmen Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. 1910 Fruitgum Company - 'Simple Simon Says'

This is so cute and so innocent. Bubblegum music, as it was termed in the late 1660's, was always the object of ridicule or the butt of somebody's joke about "over-commercialized silly music."

"Simple Simon Says" is a perfectly preserved specimen of this musical epoch. In fact, I played and sang it at Stacy Lebenger's Bat Mitzvah with one of my very first "basement-rehearsed" rock bands. As I recall, everybody loved it. As they said at the Loretto Yacht Club (a short-lived social group within a social group), "Ain't no shame in loving what you love." This does not apply to liver.

It's a Christmas Classic from the "Snoopy Versus The Red Baron" genre of the 1960's. performed by the Royal Guardsmen, who later gave birth to (if I'm not mistaken), the heartbreaking group Lobo, who had an enormous catalog in their (his) own right...remember "Baby, I'd Love You To Want Me," "Me And You And A Dog Named Blue," and the infamously profound and melancholy "I Love You Too Much To Ever Start Liking You / So Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend"?*

Third-Rate Romance: DAZZ Musicbreaks

It's The Amazing Rhythm Aces performing a terrifically cynical but delightfully musical view of the adult pick-up bar scene as it was some years ago. The song is done as a twangy (open-stringed treble guitar in the key of A major) country rumba (very similar to a fairly presto calypso -- think about Elvis Presley's rendition of "It's Now Or Never" marrying either "Under The Boardwalk" by Ben E. King and the Drifters or "Save The Last Dance For Me" ).

The lyrics are absolutely hysterical, the open-voiced country harmony on the refrain (with a hangin' country ninth) is a sing-along-pass-out-the-lyrics-sheets-to-all-the-kinfolk dream come true. It is so pleasantly melodic, the lyrics (listen closely, kids) really are a shocking contrast.

Wonderful country guitar licks -- reminiscent of fine moonshine rockabilly. Classic.

Build Me Up Buttercup - Foundations!

I am so very ashamed for loving this song. It is trite. Its lyrics, while meaningful (boy is crazy about girl, but girl is toying with boy's affections -- she is young and fickle -- he might be a bit of a nerd with the characteristic ectomorphic* Steve Urkel physique and the lovestruck puppy dog eyes of every young science student who secretly craves the attentions of a high school cheerleader), are just sung as superficial poetry. But ---The damned problem is that it happens to be the perfect pop AM rock n' roll single. The Foundations, who performed it, were amazingly, joyously musical. Period.

Memorable, light, uplifting, sing-along lyrics (everybody at the Baby Boomer party knows this song, as do TWO FULL GENERATIONS hence!), predictable rhyme. Full instrumentation. Whining Hammond organ with Leslie speakers. Bongos. Lush harmony. Singing (and chorus response!). Dynamics (softer, louder, buildups, bits of bongo-bopping suspense between each repeat of the refrain), Modulation. Studio fade at the end -- the magic part where the key escalates a half-step or so and the volume fades rapidly away as the group levitates upward to rock n' roll heaven, and leaves us wanting more.

Once infected with the song, it plays over and over in our heads -- even during algebra examinations, the SATs, the MCATs or while studying to pass the Board examination for some profession to which we've chosen to surrender and possibly sacrifice our childhoods.

Sometimes a solid single is a home run.

Go ahead. Enjoy it. Sing along. Feel as light as a breeze. Forget about who you are pretending to be, and let the music do what no tricylic antidepressant, SSRI, benzodiazepine pill or therapy session could ever do -- give you an experience of carefree, smiling contentment. I write RadioDAZZ because I want to share my pure, unconditional, unfettered love of music (many types) with the world. By the time I was in sixth grade, I knew that I was born to be a musician and performer. By the time I turned 32, I realized that I would probably never make music my career.

As a reasonably intelligent but depression-prone person, I have noticed (after years and years of searching for true happiness and contentedness) that the only distraction that truly works is music. Music is medicine. I offer it for free.

Since I so seldom perform music, I serve at least a part of my destiny's directives by bringing music, as a messenger to as many people as I am able. And while my career resume does not reflect my years of playing, teaching and performing music, the very least I can do is to share my zeal for it with everyone. We need music. It is a force which brings people together (be it in church or around the campfire), and touches each of us personally. It can make us laugh at joy-filled memories, or cry at the raw cut of emotion -- but it always restores our true, perfect Humanity to us. Even if only for a short while.

I ask you to do this for our endangered species:

Trustmaker! The Evolving Tymes - True DAZZ

The Tymes have been around since the late 1950s, adding their own beautiful coda onto the doo-wop era with "So In Love." The signature "ooh-eee-ooh" and intermittent a cappella portions of that classic were so purely, honestly romantic. And the song just rolled on, as smoothly as a wave -- you could gently sway along to it and pop your fingers to the perfect, clean linear 4/4 beat. Now for an amazing contrast: The group evolved with the times (no pun) and managed to absolutely retain their harmonic and stylistic integrity. When I first heard this song "Trustmaker," I was an undergraduate at University. The song grabbed me by the lapels and kept playing in the background of my mind. Amazingly, it was still THEM! Great harmony, double pace beat (but still straight 4/4), and a pure hit, but this time, with a nice modulation to add to the intensity and rocket the song to a climaxing coda to its coda. These guys had soul from the start and never, ever lost it. The pumping' bass line takes you right up the scale, note by note, increasing the impact of the song.

They have been as diverse and flexible as they are survivors of wave after wave of fad music. This song, "Trustmaker" came out in the disco era (the mid 1970s) and received a small run of airplay. Yet, it is a great song, in the melodic, "up and down the scale" tradition of the Spinners. It comes beautifully produced, fully orchestrated with a funky climbing bass line and a rich, upbeat sound. It was great to dance to...

Enjoy the pure positive energy of this song. Listen for the deluxe "heighten the excitement" modulation and lots of rev-ups to great verse vocals and instrumental parts...that crescendo builds endlessly. When the song ends, you're still hungry. I love that in a song.

Save A Prayer - 80's Icons - Duran Duran - DAZZRadio

1983 - A very eerie, moody song, deep, complex, synthed-out. Duran Duran floating between two minor keys in an unforgettably effective modulation. Remove sharp objects, turn off all communications equipment, light a candle, and just meditate into the unfathomable depths of this powerful mood piece.

Wildly, I wasn't overly fond of most eighties music, but now it haunts me as if it somehow crept into a long hidden corridor of my subconscious mind -- waiting for the time when it could be released inside of me. Some of these 80s songs have really become an inseparable part of my musical soul and my life's soundtrack. This song brings back a frenetic and confusing time in my emotional development. And some of these masterworks of the 1980's make me simultaneously introspective and retrospective.

Light a candle. I'll be with you. RadioDAZZ takes you time traveling, but always brings you right back home -- unless you want to stay in some other time. Lightning Strikes! - Lou Christie - RadioDAZZ Classix

I was a kid in elementary school when I first this song. Lou Christie's incredible on-and-off falsetto took me for a joyous ride. Brilliantly written, very complex, dramatic changes in dynamics and a full orchestra (deluxe with chick singers) laying out this politically-incorrect, primitive, sexist song of wild passion. A+ all around: writing (both music and hysterical lyrics), arranging, orchestration, and performance. Lou Christie was the "other" Jersey Boy of his day. Listen for the modulations, intense thundering drum rolls, electric bass rifts, and brass (saxophones, bones, trumpets...mmmmmm!) enough to set the hairs on the back of your neck tingling.

Rich, full orchestration. I dedicate this song to my daughter, Leslie who quickly adopted it as her anthem after she'd heard it played once or twice in my car (a super oldies tape), but when she had just graduated (summa cum laude) in potty training. Rufus Wainwright - "Hallelujah" - Poetry In Motion - RadioDAZZ

This song, "Hallelujah," has gotten a tremendous amount of airplay, and has been performed by numerous artists, including Leonard Cohen, who wrote the lyrics. It is somber to the point of liturgical music....like a prayer. The lyrics are rich in biblical allegory and real-world casual conversation, adding a magical element of profound irony and conflict to the song.

This particular version (Rufus Wainright performs live at the Fillmore) is the most sacred version ever to capture my attention. Rufus' voice captures the full depth of sorrow associated with experiencing heart-wrenching disillusionment and loss. I hope that you truly enjoy this version -- it is a beautifully poetic song, sung by a very sensitive young man with a great burden of his own to bear. He could not have sung this song so perfectly if he had not known suffering. The caged bird sings -- unforgettably.

A special thanks to my daughter Leslie, who introduced me to this song in the 1990s while I was driving her to a friend's home. She said, "Dad, you'll LOVE this song. It's incredible." And so it was, my beautiful daughter.

Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - DAZZology -McFadden & Whitehead

This song is pure, disco soul. Simple, with an unforgettable signature bassline and some early-stage synth drums. McFadden and Whitehead did something great with this recording. It is so wonderfully simple, yet so artfully, richly arranged, orchestrated and performed. You could hear it in every disco and juke joint (the few that were left, anyway) in my home state.

Back when my soul was whole, I would play this with some buddies, and we would jam on the three-chord pattern for fifteen to twenty minutes at a clip. We once jammed to this thing to the point of blisters and drenching sweat in Davey's basement (an obscure location in Long Island) to a capacity crowd of nine people, and I actually heard (through a third-party source the following day) that one of the girls thought I was handsome. God, that had me shining for a few days...little things used to mean so much.

This song was truly representative of its time, and a wonderful, confusing time in my life.

Glenn Frey of The Eagles performs the ultimate, trite 1-4-5 (surfin' guitar key of E Major) "The heck with all of you" song (in the spirit of The Eagles' fabulous "Already Gone," one of every fellow's favorites when he has finally untied the knot (or the noose) with his girlfriend. These songs have something in common aside from the Frey Factor -- they are both great for driving with the windows wide open and singing at the top of your lungs down a major highway. They give you a sort of adrenaline rush before the loneliness and blues creep up on you.

For guitarophiles (I'd better watch it here), there's a truly neat inversion of an E7th chord (with the G# at the top) that adds tan and twang -- it will bring to mind The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There."

Candi Stanton was a one-hit wonder during the golden era of disco. This song is a sparkler. She deserved much more airplay, and a longer run. The song really gallops. Please put on your platform shoes, bellbottoms, drugstore perfume or cologne, turn up the volume, close your eyes and sway.

Terrific song, great riffs, rich instrumentation and that disco pulse that kept my heart in sync when it was so much wiser than my brain. Heck - You know what I mean.

This has got to be one of my favorite, straight-ahead, rock-n-roll classics. It is so upbeat, uptempo and positive. The harmonies are rich and bright, with just a touch of soul from Michael McDonald. The song just rocks along like a kite on a spring afternoon. You can hear the sunshine. The instrumentation (a mixture of twangy open-stringed guitar rhythm and some terrifically artful synth by McDonald) is terrific. The song is so POSITIVE.

RadioDAZZ promises that you won't be disappointed. This song is a treasure -- it's a crying shame that it didn't receive more airplay. It will get you moving faster'n Peet's coffee.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight: Classic Rock De-Stresses Us.

The Tokens' version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a multi-generational and cross-genre song, as it had already been well before The Lion King ever came out as a family music (sorry Timone and Pumba).

It features a genuine African lyric in the famous refrain [a whim-o-weh, a whim-o-weh...], and in the moving harmony that pervades this stellar pop classic and propels it rythmically like a train along the rickety trains. Listen for terrific "Frankie Valli"-style falsetto, the wonderful wooden drums (played with mallets!), a sneaky hint of the lengendary Theremin (an electronic instrument that never fully came out of the lab, with a few notable exceptions such as The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," the theme from the ancient television show "The Outer Limits" and some others -- an eerie, but distinctive sound), and other wonderful touches that make this melodic, harmonious sing-along-or-die-trying record immortal.

And with all of that going for it, it came into being after a gifted chap had visited Africa and couldn't get the refrain (actually based upon a chant of the indigenous people) out of his mind.

I have always been a Steely Dan (Fagen and Becker) fan. They have a private niche in the space between jazz, rock and psychosis. The chord structures, the wild polytonality, the screaming guitar, and Fagen's deranged tenor voice singing the type of lyrics that bring our unspoken nightmares to lurid life -- and sometimes the wordplay is hysterically funny [listen carefully, as it is very dry] as well as cynically ironic...

They continue to amaze me. F and B are prolific, iconic and timeless songwriters, recording artists and performers. They have brought virtually every Plutonian social taboo (via some clever 'double entendres' or by some 'strategic insertion') into incredibly musical songs which have absolutely captivated both their inner-cult audience (I am a card-carrying member), and the pop listeners (the outer circle who sing along to the likes of "Reelin' In The Years," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," and "When Josie Comes Home."

Their mastery of every technical aspect of writing and arranging music spans a wide spectrum of styles, from reggae to swing and shuffle.

One of their darkest tunes is served up here for those RadioDAZZ fans who stay up too late and watch too many graphically violent cable programs -- ION television; Positively Entertaining! -- and have viewed too-many grisly and crimson-laced crime scenes.

The song (starting with a distorted, arpeggiated G7aug9th chord, which is always ominous) is one of incredible depravity and desperation. And it is damned captivating. Maybe even hypnotic.

This song is one of a kind. Truly. "Kung Fu Fighting" is truly infantile, trite and misinformed (as to the ways of the martial arts)...having said that, the song is absolutely cute, unassuming and entertaining. The opening riff (with its pentatonic air) is fabulously distinctive -- if you hum it to most anyone, that person (the anyone) will exclaim, "Kung Fu Fighting? Isn't that the song about Kung Fu Fighting?"

Don't think about it. Just enjoy it. Silly sound effects and all. It's a "old school" type of Top 40 hit.

I dedicate this song to Soke Joseph Droual, owner of the New York Martial Arts Hombu (in Huntington, New York), my martial arts instructer, a true Master, an inductee into the US Martial Arts Hall Of Fame, and a wonderful, faithful friend.

The Village People - Great, Really.

Everybody loves to make fun of The Village People. Maybe they were somewhat over-the-top with their outfits, theatrics and moronic simplicity, but yet they cranked out some terrific ground-breaking disco that made for great dancing. Genuine pumpin', thumpin', do the bumpin' music, filled with life and optimism.

RadioDAZZ comes out of the guitar case and confesses his love for some of the flashy, get-you-moving music that these dazzling (garish) disco icons made so popular. How many bar mitzvahs, weddings and other catered affairs were graced by "YMCA" or some other Village People staples in the early 80s? You can grimace and you can frown, but you can't put these pump-it-up pioneers down. A collection of several of their very best tunes (IMHO) follows for you pleasure. Re-visit them. Bring on your Huckapoos, hairspray, Halston, Polo, leisure suits, platform shoes and jewelry. Men - open those top two shirt buttons. Ladies - whirl, twirl and drive the boys crazy. If I like it, if it moves me, I savor it for what it is, in and of itself, separate and apart from all other considerations. I permit music to speak to my heart, and do not try to "evaluate it" with my limited mind. The music takes me away; at least, for a short while.

My profound love of music leaves neither time nor tolerance for hatred, petty politics or social commentary. I do not sit in judgment of the composer, arranger, producer, or artist, except with respect to the final product - the music that moves me.

For the record (no pun intended), and as far as we (RadioDAZZ and I) are concerned, the music sings its own song, and it speaks for itself.

OH NO! - It's "Beware Of The Blob" - RadioDAZZ Remembers

As a youngster (growing up in the Carpathian Alps with my grandpapa, a respected cheesemaker and impaler, during the French and Indian War), one of my favorite science fiction movies (starring the late Steve McQueen) was "The Blob." It was campy, trite, and budget-tight, but it was thoroughly entertaining, especially if you were a teenager (which I wasn't) in your freshly-waxed Studebaker (or Biscayne) at the drive-in theater.

The theme song from the movie is actually a wonderful Mambo. Very, very catchy. Please click on the link and enjoy this bit of musical nostalgia. You'll find it difficult not to dance around with a foolish grin on your face, and the song will be running through your mind for days. I promise [but being a prudent businessperson, I will not put that into writing. Ha!].

This masterpiece was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 1958. The vocal was performed by The Five Blobs, who later went on to various unnotable cover careers under the US Federal Witness Protection Program.

One of the most spirited, uplifting, you-can-sing-along (without shame) songs performed in the traditional Jersey Shore (pronounced "shaw") tradition by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Great brass riffs, wonderful dynamics, and a pleading, impassioned plain-voiced singing style that is pure love of music. We've all felt this. We've all had a night like this.

Special thanks to Stan Helsing (a relative of the legendary Van Helsing,the vampire slayer) for performing this song in a karaoke contest in a ridiculous movie that I was blessed to accidently watch the other night.

Work Break: "Show And Tell" - Music by Al Wilson

1973 was the year that Al Wilson came crashing into my life with his hit single "Show And Tell." Intensely soulful, with full orchestration and elegant orchestration (great bass line, tangy clavinet-like electric keyboard, choral backing, some terrific top-of-the-voice-register modulation built in to the song itself -- rare and very powerful). A perfect soul single, exemplary of the funky but romantic side of the love ballads of the 1070's.

You'll enjoy this perfect single. It is a flawless Top 40 gem.

Freda Payne sings "Band of Gold" on Soul Train. This song was her breakthrough hit (with a nice counterpoint riff on electric sitar, and a bass line with a slightly middle eastern feel), and her performance, while lip-synched, was just incredible. This was my younger sister's favorite song, and one of the first 45 rpm vinyl singles she bought. She played this record to death -- I pretended to be tired of it, but I secretly loved it.

Music Break: Luther Van Dross And Gregory Hines

I enjoyed the late Luther's Van Dross' earlier, more soulful and less over-produced songs...such as "If Only For One Night," and "Never Too Much," but he started losing me as he produced more and more covers of Burt Bacharach tunes, and 1960s pop music. He had gotten too smooth, and too polished to retain his soulful funkaciousness (a Lingovation). I was a fan, but not a very faithful one.

Gregory Hines (now passed on), a fabulous tap dancer and actor with an amazingly sweet mellifluous voice (which was too seldom heard), sang a unique and stunningly beautiful duet with Luther called "Nothing Better Than Love." Their solo verses complement each other, and their voices in counterpoint harmony are heavenly. I listened to this song every single day, several times each day, for more than a month before I could listen to any of the other songs of the CD. Sometimes I hungered for the isolated holiness of the song so much that, if I were interrupted by a call on my cellular phone, or by some rapid maneuvering in traffic, I would re-start the song just to savor its sweetness and delicacy from the very, very beginning.

RadioDAZZ recalls the 1980s.

The music of the 1980s was just an ambient part of my life; I was busy trying to build a career, make a fortune, seek approval (often, through desperate means) from members of the opposite sex; teach college and maintain a potentially (in retrospect) pre-cancerous tan. Yet, even though the music was not foveal (as it had been for me in the 1970s and the 1960s), it was always there, albeit peripherally...the background to the movie of my life. I under-rated and under-appreciated it.

I missed out on The Thompson Twins, Eddie Money, Soft Cell, U2, We B 40, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, Joan Jett, Mr. Mister, REM, Paul Young, Howard Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Oingo Boingo, Squeeze, Mr. Big, New Order, The Monroes, Suzanne Vega, Modern English, Bad Company, Aha, Belinda Carlisle (sp?), John Cougar Mellencamp, The Clash, Big Pig, Prince, Blondie (Debbie Harry), The Pretenders, Crowded House, Styx, Kansas, The Go Gos, Bad Company and a host of others, including disco stuff (late 1970s to early 1980s) that deserves a room of its own -- and its own atmosphere of glitter, ear-splitting pump, Southern Comfort, shots at the bar (no guns, just drinking fools) the smells of hairspray, perfume and drugstore aftershave... (sigh)...what a heady melange [that's French!]

There wasn't a great deal of funk in the 80s. The bass was being replaced by some casio keyboardist's left hand. Drums were shallow or tinny. Video performances were taking the ears out of the music and putting the money in the hands of the cosmetologists. But some of the songs were grabbers. And there were some truly powerful guitar and keyboard riffs. Truly.
