Argue if you'd like, but great bass lines made many a song memorable. Now with virtually every keyboard player's left hand on synth, the pop of that bass guitar, that signature pump-it riff is sorely lacking. Stevie Wonder is one notable exception -- he kicks a wicked bass line on the clavinet. A great bass line could get a man to dancin'. A great guitar riff (on the other hand) could get you up out of your seat and ready to rock...signature guitar riffs are almost extinct.

Here are several songs with the kind of bass lines that make me want to put down my guitar and pick up the electric bass again. And then again, there are a few that make me want to put the bass back on the stand, pick up my Les Paul, and strap it over my shoulder. Click on each of 'em. Every single one. One after the other.

Also -- I've given you the links, but no song names. If you're one of "us," you'll know the names of the songs within the first couple of bass notes, or with the first pick on the steel of a great guitar riff (oops -- sometimes it's a fingernail that touches the steel or nylon of a guitar -- amazingly delicate -- more intimate, in a way.
