R.E.M. -- "The One I Love"

You have to love twangy, resonating, open strings when guitars are played in E major or E minor. Those strings ring out hauntingly. Just add some reverb, and you have a kind of surround-sound tunnel.

R.E.M did "The One I Love" in the 1980's, and I loved the unvarnished crying sound of it, as well as the simple, "Secret Agent Man" instrumentation. Four chords... E minor, D major, G major and C major, plus a terrific Neil Diamondesque (from "Solitary Man")bridge which leads to wordless but passionate expression.

"The One I Love," by R.E.M. Enjoy a celebration of the 1980s open E string, reverb and wailing. Catchy song, too. Excellent!
