This song is just devastatingly intense, and well-performed. It has a pulse to it, rather like the heart of a lovesick girl in a singles' bar. It is has a terrific hook (refrain, for you non-playing appreciators fo soulful rock), with some very sweet and unforgettable harmony. The lyrics are pleading and passionate - could she be singing about...Elvis Presley (the other fellow named "Elvis" before Elvis Costello).
Take some time to savor "Black Velvet" (if you please...). Alannah Myles sings, and brings to mind Kim (with the "Bette Davis Eyes"), Dusty Springfield, Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt, and Sheryl Crow.
