Carl Carlton did a fabulous cover (many versions of this song had been done both before and after Carlton's version) of "Everlasting Love" in 1974. It is inspiring, vibrant, energetic and straight ahead. The plucked "A" drone note (played on guitar throughout) gives it a constant push...a ceaseless drive...a fast pulse. The refrain is so melodic and catchy it is guaranteed to hook your heart.
This same effect was used by The Supremes in their high-energy unforgettable version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On." In that tune, the drone note was an "E," as in "electric!" It was complimented by a kick-in-the-chest drumbeat with a marching military bass laying down a foundation of sound like the victory chant of a conquering army. Of course, the Supremes came first.
But give Carl Carlton a chance to "open up your eyes/ then you'll realize/ you'll never be denied/ everlasting love." Feel the exhilarating rush of emotion when a man realizes he needs his his woman back to complete him. We men have made an art out of pleading.
