This song, which I believe was actually written by Judy Collins, is one of the very best CSN&Y signature songs of the "Summer Of Love" at Woodstock. It has a marchlike quality, and a powerful punch and self-righteousness that stills brings gooseflesh to my arms, and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
Long hair, hallucinogenic drugs, embroidered bellbottoms, the smell of marijuana everywhere -- everyone was "hey, man." People picked up hitchhikers and actually let them off alive. Strangers talking about nothing together for hours. There were campus rebellions. There was insane promiscuity. There was a great deal of scarring, too. Many unconfessed, hidden broken hearts.
Too many drug overdose deaths. Lots of subtle brain damage. Clearasil. Fu Manchu mustaches......... But there was laughter. There was hope for a better, brighter future. And, sometimes, you lived in the moment and you just couldn't believe that life could feel so good.

p.s. Remember the National Guard at Kent State? Four students killed in Ohio. Good God. Flower Power, with an undercurrent of a frightened Establishment. A dark sign -- but it seemed to be a freak accident. A one-time occurrence. A terrible mistake in the "Land Of The Free, And The Home Of The Brave."
