The group was Wild Cherry. The song, which was completely outrageous for its time (as it is timeless in its outrage) was "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." No single record has ever done so much with Ninth chords (the song is in E), with the possible exception of James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," and no other song was quite so openly exploitative of the "fuzz tone" sound as this odd beauty. I still laugh when I hear it, even if I unconsciously rock to its primal beat. It even has a baritone sax honking holy h*ll along with the electric bass.
Sit back. Relax. Headphones? Bass boost? Loud? Give it everything you've got. It's Wild Cherry.
Enjoy this bit of sacred discography and vinyl virtue. You know what to do. Sorry about the tasteless video...it's almost always better with your eyes closed.
