This song was written by Carole King, a legendary songsmith, in the early 1960s. I've heard her version, as well as covers by James Taylor, The Drifters (featuring Ben E. King, of "Stand By Me" fame) and Laura Nyro, a wonderful songwriter herself.
The first major-release version of this song, as performed by the Drifters when I was a mere tadpole, was probably one of the best versions of one of my favorite songs. More recently, I heard Laura Nyro's cover of this classic, which is delicate, with a subtle wistful beauty all its own. Interestingly (and saddeningly), it was Laura's only break into the Top 100 Songs -- while her talents as a performer are admired (to the point of adoration) by a small cultlike following, she remains best known as one of the best Top 40 hit songwriters of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Take a bit of time away from your labors and enjoy two versions of this song: The first is by The Drifters (I liked this one even better -- if that's possible -- than their fabulous and famous version of "Under The Boardwalk," which featured violins, castanets, and some wonderful Ben E high notes); the second is by Laura Nyro, which is a treat of a performance to be savored in its own space.
