Joe Cocker performing the rock classic "Delta Lady" in 1970 on his "Mad Dogs And Englishmen" tour. An amazing song -- probably the daddy that influenced the birth of Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care Of Business." I loved this song. Leon Russell also did a wild and wonderful version of the same song, but this (Joe Cocker) is the version that I'd choose to be stuck on an island with... I had to have a friend write the lyrics on a sheet for me (Mr. Cocker does not enunciate -- he emotes), but I couldn't get enough of this song.
Cocker, actually a native of Canada with an uncontained lust for Delta (i.e., Southern-Cooked) Rock and Blues, veritably screams his vocal cords out and gesticulates with his arms in moves that some surmised was a form of palsy, and some just called "he gone wild." He explodes with enthusiasm and energy. He, Leon Russell, and the undeniably bizarre (but madly talented) Winter Brothers (Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter) were a major force in the 1960s to 1970s Delta Rock craze. There's an unmistakable lilt of Ragin' Cajun (Doug Kershaw*) to all of the wonderful music that was born of this genre.
