Herb Alpert went to medical school in Mexico, and promptly dropped out in order to enjoy the irresistible pleasure of playing Mexican-flavored music (with a pop fusion 60s attribute to it) with various area groups. He finally settled on The Tijuana Brass and had a batch of instrumental hits (most of which were turned into game show opening themes) with the group.
Later, he teamed up with a fellow named Morris, and their own production company and label was born -- A & M Records. He discovered The Carpenters, added some of the songwriting talents of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and had one of the hottest acts of the 1960s. He put down his trumpet and picked up his ledger.
He sang a beautiful song (in his never-heard-before sotto voce style) written by Bacharach and David, which could never have received enough airplay. It was a slow dancer's ticket to paradise. The song was romantic, cleanly produced, and become an instant, albeit short-lived hit: "This Guy's In Love With You."
I loved that song. I hope that you'll enjoy it as much as I did. If you're a Baby Boomer, you'll get gooseflesh with the memories -- if you are a Gen X, Gen Y or Millennial DAZZ fan, you'll find out a bit about the likely backdrop to the notion of your conception...
