Third-Rate Romance: DAZZ Musicbreaks

It's The Amazing Rhythm Aces performing a terrifically cynical but delightfully musical view of the adult pick-up bar scene as it was some years ago. The song is done as a twangy (open-stringed treble guitar in the key of A major) country rumba (very similar to a fairly presto calypso -- think about Elvis Presley's rendition of "It's Now Or Never" marrying either "Under The Boardwalk" by Ben E. King and the Drifters or "Save The Last Dance For Me" ).

The lyrics are absolutely hysterical, the open-voiced country harmony on the refrain (with a hangin' country ninth) is a sing-along-pass-out-the-lyrics-sheets-to-all-the-kinfolk dream come true. It is so pleasantly melodic, the lyrics (listen closely, kids) really are a shocking contrast.

Wonderful country guitar licks -- reminiscent of  fine moonshine rockabilly. Classic.

Just enjoy the Fabulous Rhythm Aces' unforgettable rendition of "Third Rate Romance".

Either click on the hyperlink or on the YouTube video player below (if you're seeing this in the non-RSS version) to get your best grin on. I hope you enjoy it. Maybe I can find a printout of the words...  Did you know that Dwight Yoakum performed a cover of this song, too? Well, neither did I.

Music Break - "Up On The Roof"- RadioDAZZ Lives!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

This song was written by Carole King, a legendary songsmith, in the early 1960s. I've heard her version, as well as covers by James Taylor, The Drifters (featuring Ben E. King, of "Stand By Me" fame) and Laura Nyro, a wonderful songwriter herself.

The first major-release version of this song, as performed by the Drifters when I was a mere tadpole, was probably one of the best versions of one of my favorite songs. More recently, I heard Laura Nyro's cover of this classic, which is delicate, with a subtle wistful beauty all its own. Interestingly (and saddeningly), it was Laura's only break into the Top 100 Songs -- while her talents as a performer are admired (to the point of adoration) by a small cultlike following, she remains best known as one of the best Top 40 hit songwriters of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Take a bit of time away from your labors and enjoy two versions of this song: The first is by The Drifters (I liked this one even better -- if that's possible -- than their fabulous and famous version of "Under The Boardwalk," which featured violins, castanets, and some wonderful Ben E high notes); the second is by Laura Nyro, which is a treat of a performance to be savored in its own space.

Enjoy them both! You know what to do. Escape for a few moments -- its cheaper than a cruise, and you won't get seasick or overspend your budget in the casino. Come with me. -- Dazz
