REM is one of my favorite open - string, guitar twanging, angry groups of the 1990s, with intense lyrics, penetrating vocals and a string of hits which included "The One I Love," and "Orange Crush" [which contains some frightening Vietnam War imagery for a group seemingly so young]. They were an outstandingly powerful-sounding group for the otherwise thin 1990s. Part of R.E.M.'s magic, aside from its lightning intensity was its sheer unbridled emotion in both lead vocals and harmony. And that open-string resonance made every song into a mantra.
This song, "Stand..." was the theme song for a short-lived TV comedy series starring Chris Elliott called "Get A Life."
If you're at work, disturb the peace and get everyone singing (even the Nurse Ratchet and Miss Grundy) types by cranking up the volume to the maximum and exploding out of your cubicle after you click on either the hyperlink or the video player (which is shy and seldom appears) below. This is the kind of music that is pure energy -- it breaks the chains of the status quo and sets everyone free!
