I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones, but they were, to my younger self, just ambient music... slightly angry, naughty, but always there.
When I went to a live concert to hear them (tickets were free, the gift of a friend) at the New Jersey Arena, the performance hooked me.
Yep. 1990 something, and I was mesmerized. "Jumping Jack Flash," "Wild Horses," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," and this one, "Gimme Shelter," which raised the hair on the back of my neck and gave me gooseflesh.
They are a reverb revival! The performance was as electric and dynamic as if it were 1970.
There was more: "Can't You Hear Me Knocking?,"Paint It Black," and the iconic and often used "Sympathy For The Devil." It was one of the closing musical themes to the movie "Devil's Advocate," starring Keanu Reeves and an evil Al Pacino.
Mick Jagger and the crew were moving around that stage like men on fire. They were, in a word, explosive. I've been a fan since. They are hit makers, performers and as wild as a combination of Steppenwolf and Aha! Their untamed sound was and is is purely magical.
I want you to enjoy "Gimme Shelter," a song that screams several messages that are eternally applicable to Humankind and the state of Human affairs. Click below for this treat from The Rolling Stones - still young, still rockin', still deadly as a loaded pistol:
