Fact: Bill Withers, like your host (me) is a stutterer. Interestingly (for your neurologists, psychologists, speech pathologists, and bullies), he doesn't stutter at all when he sings. While I no longer stutter when speaking or singing, I consider myself to be a recovering stutterer - I don't think anyone with this difficulty ever truly recovers in full.
This song is pure soul, by definition. It features simple, rugged instrumentation -- that crazy clavinet riff that bites right into you like a pit bull, and some very scrappy guitar.
