I was taking a
social studies final exam on a very, very hot June day. The classroom windows were all open, but there was not breeze at all. You cold actually smell the asphalt in the schoolyard as it baked in the sun. All of the sudden, the sweaty monotony was broken by the sound of some neighborhood music addict playing his phonograph at the top volume -- it was echoing -- the song was "
Spinning Wheel," the group was
Blood, Sweat and Tears, and the first chord (a
D7 augmented 9th!!!) was so electrifying that the hair stood up on my neck. Then the
bass line kicked in, with that straight 4 on 4 cowbell, and I was mesmerized. I passed the exam (barely).
I give you
David Clayton-Thomas, one of your
Uncle DAZZ' favorite singers. His voice was not anything like the sweet, jazzy stuff that is tossed into the "
blue-eyed soul" genre. He is pure, raw and on fire...especially with some wildly discordant brass accompanying him.
