THE ULTIMATE DISCO BASS LINE ! - Genuine Funkosity.

Vaughan Mason And Crew (some say Vaughn Mason And Crew) created the most-imitated, iconic disco bass line that has even stolen my breath away. This song was an inspiration for so many other disco-era songs I deserves a place in the disco hall of fame. And "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" wasn't cutesy or lightweight. It was truly a fusion of deep, dark, hypnotic funk with hustle-era disco. It wasn't flashy, or Top 40. It was hard-core ghetto biting its way into the mainstream of middle-class and upper-middle-class rock.

It took us over like a weaponized soul virus.

A batch of us out in suburbia were even beginning to doubt our genuine ethnicity, and started to confront our mothers and fathers about the casual bigotry that we had grown up with. That bass (picked, plucked, slapped, flanged, slid, two-note chorded, or patterned, like Paul McCartney's rhythmic and repetitive lines) made a permanent imprint on our souls.

The terrific bouncy disco beat (reminiscent of such hits as "Aquarius," "Concrete And Clay" and a whole host of great songs by Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons spanning over two decades) made this song a sing along, dance along Hues Corporation Sensation when it first emerged on Top 40 radio.

We were secretly singing "Rock The Boat" when we were sitting in class. Clubs, discos and juke joints were firing it out all over the USA.

Ironically, the beat of this wonderful DiscoDAZZ re-discovery is also suitable for a light calypso (very apropos of the sailing lyrics) or for a slow and swinging meringue or merengue [Did I spell that correctly either time?].

I first heard this amazing song when I was an undergraduate in college. I loved the straight-4 disco beat, the signature bass line and the animated flute licks surrounding Gil Scott-Heron's soulful, slightly war-worn voice: The voice of experience from a visionary. It made me want to dance. It's a hand-clapping tune, and in the mid-seventies it was an underplayed, understated sensation. I used to listen to music, without digging deeply into the message embedded into the lyrics.

The song had haunted me for years. Every so often it burned at the corners of my mind. It keeps popping up every time I hear about, or walk onto the real-life set a tragedy fueled by alcohol and alcoholism. It is a snapdragon of a song. A bear-trap hidden in the lush woods. The rhythm pulls you in, but it is mantra about the bottle. The destruction of people's loves and lives because of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Too many wreaths and roadside crosses to count.

I dedicate this song to my brothers and sisters who have lived with alcoholism, or who have had their lives wrecked by it. If you can't moderate it -- Eliminate It.

This song is a sorrowful cry and a wake-up call for ethanol-fueled traffic accidents, fights, deaths, and people who have to live and serve their sentences for things that they cannot even remember doing, but regret every morning when they wake up.

This gemstone is a hustle in 12-steps. If you're there, or you've been touched by it, or gone to meetings to work at putting it all together, you'll know exactly what RadioDAZZ is saying.

The song is a classic. It is the best --- a mixture of Sly Stone, Bobby Caldwell, Curtis Mayfield, Brick, The Brothers Johnson and even Neil Young. The song goes on, as does the saga.

The message, again [dig, dudes]: "Don't get into the bottle. Don't Let the bottle get into you." RadioDAZZ loves you and the world needs you here. Only You can be who You are.

Disco has lost Donna Summer -- its first Queen-caliber disco diva extraordinaire. She will be hurtfully missed, but always remembered.

With an incredible string of hits from "Love to Love You Baby," "Last Dance," "She Works Hard For The Money," "On The Radio," and my personal favorite, "Spring Affair," she had us sweating and swinging across the disco dance floor, fully intoxicated with the chemistry of youth, combined with the liberating sound of her powerful voice backed by a pulsing beat that made every person's heart leap in simultaneous rhythm under the rainbow light of the crystal disco ball.

RadioDAZZ remembers. I'll never forget the exhilarating sensation of hustling around on my platform shoes to her phenomenal hits...in my late teens to my mid-twenties, my blindingly bright faux silk shirt fashionably unbuttoned to mid-chest, my cowardice thinly-veiled behind a nervous, witty veneer of false bravado... Donna helped us dream of endless possibilities, crazy romance and a perfect future. She invigorated every cell of our youth with boundless energy and a spirit of adventure.
