Elvis Costello is an unlikely-looking musician. He comes across looking a bit like a disheveled rabbinical student (perhaps a cousin of Woody Allen's) waiting for answers. He is not an egomaniac. He is totally involved in his music, much of which is memorable, and several songs of which have become truly iconic. My favorites are "Red Shoes", "Allison", "Every Day I Write The Book", "Oliver's Army", and "Veronica," which was written in conjunction with Paul McCartney.
I am also totally fascinated with the pairing of brilliant songsmith Burt Bacharach and Elvis.
My first exposure to the potential there was when I saw them perform together in an "Austin Powers" movie.
Elvis actually performed a wonderful version of "I'll Never Fall In Love Again," a 1970's Burt Bacharach hit, performed originally by Dione Warwick.
Burt and Elvis mad an album (or maybe two) together, but the music seemed artful, but somehow morose. It Wasn't quite Burt and it wasn't quite Elvis. I was moved by the song "Toledo," but that was about the extent of it.
Take some time and listen to this brief collection of Elvis Costello Music. It's in no particular order, but each song has a special magic all its own. He added undeniable flash and panache to the later 1970s and the 1980s.
