Bungle In The Jungle - Jethro Tull

I hadn't been a Jethro Tull fan back in my undergraduate years of studying nocturnal anatomy and occasionally Economics, which was my major [I actually made it to the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society for International Academic Achievement In The Field Of Economics! They'd probably let their guard down...] . I was more interested in conventional Top 40 and falling into the wondrous web of soul, funk and Motown.

Needless to say, when the song "Bungle In The Jungle" came out, it was such a raucous departure from their typical, introverted medieval-inspired flute and lyre madrigal material (think about "Thick As A Brick," for example, which bored the guts out of me, as opposed to "Brick House," one of Lionel Richie's later efforts which had true soul pulse running through it and partly catalyzed my conversion to The RadioDAZZ guy -- a living one-person/ multiple personalities study in racial and ethnic diversity and confused confunktion.

I was listening to Eddie Harris, Wilson Pickett, The Gap Band, The Brothers Johnson, The Isleys and some of the incredible harmonies and beats of The Four Tops and The Temptations -- I was leaning toward the darker side of the Top 40, but I left a great space in my heart for some jazz/rock/brass groups... Tower Of Power; Chase; Ten Wheel Drive; Blood, Sweat And Tears; and Chicago. I loved the fiery sound of brass and the emphasis that all of these 'big band groups" were putting on electric bass riffs.

But this one purely white (but it's alright!) song (even more than "Teacher" or "Aqualung") had an uncharacteristically progressive, humorous, hidden funkiness that I found as humorous (thematically) as I found captivating.

Michael Jackson: PYT ("Pretty Young Thing")

Michael Jackson, a tormented soul who wrought childhood abuse into amazing talent, was the indisputable King Of Pop. May his soul find find the peace which he could never find in a life surrounded by abusers, liars, parasites, misleaders and lowbrow Kevorkians. Amen, M.J. R.I.P.

When I did a stint as a university professor this fabulous song came out, but was underplayed. I thought it was great all-around pop. I had even taken to calling my female students (in rare moments of unbridled enthusiasm and being my joyous self) "PYTs" ("Pretty Young Things"). A great idea -- using an acronym as the catchline and the title of a pop song.

THE BORDERLINES - Jeffrey Osborne - Unbelievable!

Back when he was with LTD, Jeffrey Osborne had a major hit with "Back In Love Again." He had an incredibly vast vocal range which complemented his funky voice. His lyrics (his elocution was unique) were a bit tough to understand, but if you listened hard and long enough, you were not only hearing him clearly, but you started to speak his dialect.

He had other solo hits with "On The Wings Of Love," and a host of other love ballads. His funkiest was "Stay With Me Tonight," which was a funky pop serenade with a flamingly snappy bass line - unforgettable pops and slides - but his most haunting and somehow lost song was "The Borderlines."

This song has one of the most exciting guitar riffs (with a supporting bass counterpoint) I've every worked up a sweat to. It was truly killer, and was briefly played in all manner of remix by DJs in 1984. This song is like a drug.

Listen. Let it grab you. Feel it build up to multiple climaxes. It creeps up behind you like an assassin, and takes you out. I love this song. You know the formula --- turn up the volume (for an initial stun), crank up the bass, click on the song, and be prepared to go dancing around the room. I suggest that you try this one at the office.

And as an added bonus, here's "Stay With Me Tonight" - Another killer song. Just listen to that soulful, crazed voice against that percussive poppy bass. There was, and has never been, another song, or sound, anything like it. When I first heard it, I stopped my car, jumped out into an ice-covered parking lot, and boogied around until I fell, making a total fool of myself in front of a young lady I was dating. Thankfully, she attended to my wounds -- so much so that I was ready to jump and a fall onto the ice again. But that can be our secret.
