TOO BAD, VINCE - RADIODAZZ "BORROWED YOU" FROM MAD MARKETING FOR AN ARTICLE OR TWO.

My childhood friend, Jay Goldberg, who is now a college instructor as well as the author of a number of published works regarding topics ranging from entrepreneurship and business plans, to workforce readiness and operating a small business enterprise, sends me emails, daring me, goading me to post them on RadioDAZZ. 

Normally I politely protest, or simply forget that I have several friends and should share some enjoyable moments with them. Every so often, I remember.

In my first year of junior high school, I was involved with rock n' roll (the best guitarist within a two-three block radius), but was otherwise a geeky, frightened lad, who shied away from sports. With Jay's coaching, I made my first basket (the sports kind, not the kind that you weave) in Jay's backyard. It was one of the most important moments in my life.

So you see, I'm in his debt (although I would never put that in writing).

On a serious note, Jay has introduced me, over the years, to a tremendous catalog of music and artists. He is an impeccable discographer from the 1980s to the present day. He sent me this treasure for Dazzification (a Lingovation and a Moronym) just a day ago.

This video, hysterical as it is, reminds me of the way most of the guys I grew up with danced the Hustle. In order to avoid looking like Pinocchio, I opted for a vigorous, Village People-style calisthenics/martial arts stylized version -- in the late 1970s and 1980s this was actually good enough to get me by. Now I occasionally slip in the back door at Westchester Ballroom for a lesson [yep. Like the grownups. Be quiet about this.]

Will Ferrell does an incredibly starched-white, dead-pan version of the hustle (in four dimensions....well. kind of...) to one of the songs (pure repetitious, trite, electronic synth-music) which I believe should be banned from the Galaxy - The Popcorn Song.

I will confess: this video is a guilty pleasure and it had me laughing hysterically after the first 45 seconds or so. And I barely have a sense of humor.

Listen for the effortlessly easy voice of Ron Isley, the gentle harmonies of the background voices, and especially the signature syth riff, which lilts through the song, sweetly and hauntingly.

When I first heard this song, it was playing on the car radio. It was a summer's night, not too humid but warm, and I was driving with the windows open, the wonderful fragrances of night-blooming jasmine, jonquil and honeysuckle. (I've found that fragrances -- processed through my olfactory system -- tend to bring powerful, emotionally-charged memories back in stunningly clear multisensorial detail --- music has a similarly magical effect, but with a bit less of an intial powerful emotional charge until I've listened for a few verses).

As I listened, I realized that I was falling in love with a girl who didn't even know that I really cared. All I could think of was how I wanted to just drive up to her house, knock on the door (it was very, very late) and tell her. I had a powerful picture in mind of her coming to the door (wearing a plaid bathrobe, coming out onto the front porch and rubbing her sleepy eyes, but smiling and delighted with the surprise)... and saying, "You do? Really? Oh, God. Me too."

I should have done it while I was in the thrall of the hypnotic song -- but I didn't want to chance doing something so impulsive. It was my loss. Our first impulses tell us of our truest feelings, even the ones which we hide from ourselves. If they don't lead to suicide, homicide, physical injury, harm or arrest, well, then you'd better act on them...or spend your life feeling unfulfilled and incomplete.

Sometimes stupidity is the intelligent choice. I should have just done it. Then.

The Stylistics and the Spinners were two of my favorite "Philly Disco Sound" groups during the best part of the disco era. A great deal of their music was co-composed or co-arranged by the amzing team of Gamble and Huff.

The Spinners were fabulous, with their "signature" sound, sweet harmonies and tender, thoughtful, lonely lyrics. The Stylistics had excellent, memorable songs as well, but their signature sound revolved around their lead vocalist's falsetto voice, filled with love and joy. Their music was a bit less funky, and a bit milder -- the difference between "pop" and "easy listening," perhaps. The Spinners could make you cry -- but the Stylistics made you feel glad to be alive.

I've selected several of my favorite romantic songs performed by the immortal Stylistics. "Betcha By Golly, Wow," you'll be singing along. These terrifically artful and richly orchestrated melodies will be playing inside your head long after the actual music has stopped playing on your computer...

Listen for interesting modulations, transitions, and a tangy, twangy taste of electric sitar. Lush and plush. Heavenly. The Stylistics.

RadioDAZZ - Favoritize and Rhapsodize.

EARTH, WIND AND FIRE

These are my two of my favorite songs from Earth, Wind and Fire, one of the most energetic and rich-sounding groups of the Disco era.

In a class by themselves, they used full, live, on-stage instrumentation and created a fusion of Disco and Soul that made them stand up and stand out.

I was starting to get serious about pumping iron in the gym (so that my shirts wouldn't look so empty), and still had some aspirations of a career as a musician...but I was starting to suffer from a worrisome dose of early-onset Pragmatism. I actually worked as an accountant for a short time after graduating with my MBA. Fortunately for survival of  the gossamer thread of my sanity and for the other struggling, young partner-bound junior accountants and auditors of the Manhattan-based firm, one of the partners fired me for insubordination [he caught me doing my impression of his voice, which was indeed something special]. But, back to Earth, Wind and Fire ...

The first song, "September," is straight-ahead funk, with a backbone of phenomenal, repetitive, hypnotic harmony -- all of it in high register. It was a legendary hit, and lives on (even at the end of that Ben Stiller-infested movie "Night at the Museum," or whatever it was called, when all the exhibits came to life and were dancing together in a boogie wonderland). It shouted pure joy, with an undertone of wistful nostalgia.

The second song, "Love's Holiday," was a fabulous slow-dance ballad, with distinctive, polytonal chord structures that created a combination of mystery  and majesty. It was musically quite complex, but so graceful (like a ballet dancer) that you would never feel the work that went into its composition and arrangement. It is slightly physical, with some very warm references, but it stays just below the surface and never gets crude, or undignifies the worshipful love, both in its physical and emotional forms, that inspired its creation.
