Stevie Wonder went above and beyond the funk, soul, jazz, romantic ballad and pop Top 40 genre(s) with two amazing songs. One of them was "I Am Singing," a tribute to the Motherland of Africa (sung in English, Spanish and I believe - Swahili!), and the other, which is a fiercely, fiery Afro-Cuban conga, with a fantastic pulsating beat.

It's name: "Another Star."

I offer it to all who have felt the pain from the loss of someone whom they loved who just 'moved on' and left a gaping hole in the middle of your soul.

The Spinners said it best, perhaps in the song "Love Don't Love Nobody." Amen.

Patrice Rushen ... how she made us single gents sweat....

Avoid Politics, Religion And Race In Blog Posts

Well before the movie "Men In Black" first came out, and probably when Will Smith had begun his first big role in "The Fresh Prince Of Belaire," funky disco singer Patrice Rushen had an iconic hit with "Forget Me Nots."

A haunting tune with a bit of recurring synth violin (sounding like a steadily, beating Alfred Hitchcock sound effect), electric piano and a snappy, punchy, unforgettable bass line (with a nice a capella solo in the middle of the song), I was dancing my platform heels off (actually, it was more like a drunken stagger) at Channel 80, a Disco in Long Island where 1) my friend George was always meeting girls and disappearing, and where 2) they had a free midnight buffet so I would feed my super-efficient [sigh] metabolism with mini-pizzas, egg rolls and cocktail weenies before walking out to the parking lot alone.

Of course George was long gone, which is why we took separate cars.

This song brings me back to my first apartment, with its agonies and occasional victories.

"It's A Shame", "I'll Be Around" and "One of a Kind Love Affair" were three of the Spinners' first and most powerfully arranged and orchestrated hits. The Spinners had a Motown-Philly soul mix in their richly-orchestrated sound, their choreography and energy were together and tight (yet natural), and, along with the Stylistics, they were a Gamble and Huff - influenced, 70's -dominating soul group on the fringe of the Dazz era.

Stevie Wonder wrote "It's a Shame" just for them, and he played (overdubbing) all of the instruments except for the horns on the original hit recording.

This song grabs everybody.

Make sure nobody's around (otherwise you'll need some great headphones), turn up the volume and punch up the bass...like on an old Jukebox. I double-dog dare you -- try not to sing or scream out loud. Try to sit still. Try not bob your head, Try to keep your feet in any one place. Just try -- you can't.

Listen to the amazing funky bass, popping from F to D minor, pumping out out a rythm that complements the drums like a soul march. Listen to the twang of the electric sitar on the riff between verses. Feel the intensity and anticipation build while you wait for Stevie's voice, Go down the descending pentatonic scale with the bass.

Note: It is rumored that these studio pros threw away their sheets after the first or second take and just played out, eyes closed. They wanted to see what Stevie saw. Sound by the pound.
