Before Lionel Richie become super-commercial and decided to take a solo ride, The Commodores (think "Brick House," "Machine Gun," "Easy") performed a wonderful, soulful slow-dance ballad that just knocked me out. It was so good, so pure, that all of us incapable untrained, shirt-opened-to-mid-chest non-dancers could ask a girl for a dance and just melt into the crowd on the dance floor -- and if we were truly lucky, to melt into each other with minimal steps and maximum hugging.

Dancing was an excuse. The Commodores made it easy.

The vocal harmony was artful, subtle, and cascaded throughout the entire hypnotic, almost worshipful song, with its loving sentiment. It moves like nectar through a sieve. The tasteful synth dubs just punctuated the pure beauty of melody, flowing smoothly with it, helping to build it. Oh, Baby!

There were just not enough slow-dance songs like this disco era classic. It was a break from sweaty calisthenics and gyrations to just hold someone close... It's amazing how one young man's heart can beat such different rhythms depending upon the circumstances: From explosive to breathtaking.

You know the best feeling in the world? I might --- It's feeling someone you love's heart beating against your chest as you hold that person close with no space or barriers between you.

Oh yes. Oh yes. Finger poppin', hip bumpin', fire on the dance floor... Breeze coming in through the windows, curtains waving in the summer wind of an August night.

Earth, Wind and Fire - Brazilian Rhyme:  Disco + Samba

What a smooth ride, with a gentle lapping of subtle funk and a slight musky undercurrent of deep, rich soul!

My sister used to love this song. Doesn't need lyrics. It is a wildly, melodic and rhythmic hybrid between late 70's disco and Brazilian Samba. It is brief, but wonderfully invigorating. Better than coffee. Closer to a kiss. So MUSICAL!

Shame/ Don't Know If It's Right - Evelyn "Champagne" King Double Disco Dip to make your backbone slip. The hair on the back of your neck is going to stand up (and that's a great thing). This woman had great style, great material , great arranging and wildly soulful, explosive instruments. A disco-era dynamo. Amazing bass picking. Razzy, sexy, out-of-control sax (tuned slightly on the sharp side to add some real BITE), and hypnotically-cooking, pusing dance beat.  You can feel the body heat of a packed discotheque.

I danced to "I Don't Know If It's Right" at Channel 80 (a local nightclub) with a beautifully trashing-looking divorcee (empowered with bullet-proof hairspray, and skin-tight "revelation" pants. When she found out that I was not really a first-year medical student, it took her all of TWO MINUTES to find some other guy to work on.

One truncated dance. No playing doctor. No anatomical exposition. Not with this determined woman. I should have paid more attention Evelyn King's message...
