Foreigner was one of my favorite groups of the 1980s. Starting with the freezing bite of "Cold As Ice," which came out while I was industriously pursuing my MBA (first year) and chasing after any young woman with a captivating smile who couldn't outrun me, to these other classics, they had a unique gift of utter mood immersion. While they were one band, they sang, with eerie, almost supernatural accuracy, in powerful lump-in-your-throat moods and modes.

Of all of the groups of the 1980s, Foreigner was one of the most comprehensive in its repertoire, and one of the most magical at creating powerful, full-sensory memories. They are a part of my life.

Enjoy the radical contrast between the desolate, introspective, thoughtful brooding of "I've Been Waiting For A Girl Like You," [loaded with beautiful, shape-shifting synth] to the raspy-edged, sexually-charged youthful insanity of irresistible and forbidden physical love addiction [punched out with reverberating, multiplexed distorted guitars and an over-the-top screeching, pleading sax solo] blasting out at you in "Urgent".

Chic was an early 1980's phenomenon as a disco band with some amazingly simple lyrics (some sung, some spoken seductively by the band), catchy tunes, linear easy-to-dance-to beats and a signature funky bass lines, the most notable from "Good Times," which was re-used and resurrected in many successful disco, house and pop hits. Another notable hit was Le Freak ("Freak Out") which highlighted a snappy guitar riff in A minor that rivaled my all-time favorite guitar riff (from C to A minor) in Cliff Noble's The Horse.

Getting back on point (which is a constant problem for me), I believe the group's best effort and most paralytically powerful bass punch-thump was featured in the song below.

Everybody Dance, actually says it all.

The J Geils Band knocked me out with this straight-ahead, hand-clapping piece of purebred rock n' roll.

From the captivating, biting Hammond organ (with Leslie speaker system float around sound) riff intro (and throughout), to the brass instrumental in the middle, to the unpretentious, enthusiastic vocals and harmony, this song was begging to be played at top volume through one of the old Seeburg jukeboxes.

This song was incredibly energetic, with a powerful, positive charge.

Kick it loud and proud. Boost your bass. Let those tensions out. RD, if you're out there, give me a holler. This is for you and all the cerebrotonic, staid well-behaved young men who found true release in head-banging, eardrum-splitting music.

1983 - A very eerie, moody song, deep, complex, synthed-out. Duran Duran floating between two minor keys in an unforgettably effective modulation. Remove sharp objects, turn off all communications equipment, light a candle, and just meditate into the unfathomable depths of this powerful mood piece.

Wildly, I wasn't overly fond of most eighties music, but now it haunts me as if it somehow crept into a long hidden corridor of my subconscious mind -- waiting for the time when it could be released inside of me. Some of these 80s songs have really become an inseparable part of my musical soul and my life's soundtrack. This song brings back a frenetic and confusing time in my emotional development. And some of these masterworks of the 1980's make me simultaneously introspective and retrospective.

Light a candle. I'll be with you. RadioDAZZ takes you time traveling, but always brings you right back home -- unless you want to stay in some other time. If only I could go back in time and capture all of the rapture, bottled up passion and innocent emotion that kept me in a world of mystery, with ups and downs -- and always wondering what new mystery would reveal itself to me next.
