It was brilliantly complex in its composition, its orchestration, its arrangement. The performance is haunting and touching. It brings out a certain deep longing in anyone who has ever made a bad move on a good love.

This has got to be one of my favorite, straight-ahead, rock-n-roll classics. It is so upbeat, uptempo and positive. The harmonies are rich and bright, with just a touch of soul from Michael McDonald. The song just rocks along like a kite on a spring afternoon. You can hear the sunshine. The instrumentation (a mixture of twangy open-stringed guitar rhythm and some terrifically artful synth by McDonald) is terrific. The song is so POSITIVE.

RadioDAZZ promises that you won't be disappointed. This song is a treasure -- it's a crying shame that it didn't receive more airplay. It will get you moving faster'n Peet's coffee.

You have NO IDEA how long I have looked on YT for this!! I almost could not believe my eyes; I have perused Doobie Brothers the vids up and down over and over again. I'll admit it. I snagged this post from my personal blog http://aboutdouglascastle.blogspot.com/ . This song, originally performed by the Isley Brothers, was re-made brilliantly in the 1970s by The Average White Band.

AWB takes it a bit faster, and they actually make it more intense. Listen to the power of the driving, hypnotic refrain, "Work! Work!".

If you'd like, skip the article and go right to the link at the end. I have no way of knowing, and so I won't be insulted. The song is absolutely funkacious. That's all there is to it.

I'm partly a soul and funk kind of man. This is one of the true examplars of unforgettable "grit your teeth and shake your head from side to side" direct infusion funk every dreamed up by a deranged sax screamer. Deadly good, this is...

The song was originally done by The Detergents, it was redone by Weather Report (as a funkacious, rabble-rousing razzy instrumental), The Crusaders -- the first, foremost and funkiest rendition I'd heard, deluxe with wah-wah pedal, to boot!), and then as a vocal by the Scottish group, Average White Band.

There have been other covers, other improvised lyrics ("Put it in your coffee, put it in your tea..."), other inspired attempts... but since we're all on borrowed time, I wanted to trim it down to the two very best.

The first, done in the 1970's was the hard-to-find-vocal version by AWB. It's great.

The second version is by The Crusaders, the first rendition I'd ever heard -- it is pure, virginal delight, without varnish, flamboyance or techno-foolery. It's jazz-born funk. It screams to you. The sax overlays are outpourings of the soul's need for expression -- delirium, with a funky fever. They sing; they truly do. 

Listen to both. That's an order.

Do it. Enjoy it. True Funk is an explosion of joy in a painful way -- the rush is your own adrenaline. Natural, but feels supernatural. Satisfaction guaranteed.
