Two absolute masterpieces from mid-late seventies virtuoso (former) session band ToTo, with guitar maestro Steve Lukather and the famous Porcaro Brothers. The first performance was filmed and recorded in 1990 (!) in Canada -- it's the best version of the slickly discordant, dark and mysterious "Georgy Porgy" (Uncle DAZZ's favorite Toto selection) I've ever heard. The band was incredibly tight, yet disciplined in their dynamics. Electricity, from sparks to full-out lightning was flying off of the stage. Jazz in its own genre.

The second performance is a terrific vintage live version of Toto (in the 1970s) playing their amazing 12/4 (a crazy, dizzying metre, with a pushing, rushing, forceful triplet feel) version of "Hold The Line." The right hand arm of the keyboard player must be as strong as steel [Uncle DAZZ would get carpal tunnel syndrome after two verses and the first refrain], with that steady, raining 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3....

These are two of those rare cases where the videos are as exciting as the music. See if you feel the same.

I was captured during my Disco days (daze?) by the funky, full "wall of sound" (an evolved form of Phil Specter's 60's hit-making mechanical mechanism) that Heatwave generated. It was as if they were surrounding us completely, from without and within. So aptly named, they were always on fire, with a pulse, a sense of urgency, a power of possession and mastery.

So you liked "Boogie Nights?" That's aight. It was a major breakthrough. I enjoyed it. But the Grooveline was so rich and soulful, with its signature bass line (an companion bass vocal), and its wildly eccentric but electric de-tuned tack piano riffs. They add to that ever-youthful feeling of adrenaline-infused happy panic and the magic of infinite possibilities. Music could make us feel invincible.

Love that twangy, trebly, guitar augmented ninth played way up on the fretboard (like a constant replay of the first chord of Blood, Sweat and Tears' "Spinning Wheel"0, and the staircase of discordant brass leading into each amazing verse. So busy. So much going on. All of it joyful. Somehow it all works.

If you just sit in your chair, and put this song on high volume and bass boost, I'll bet you'll feel the hair rise on your neck, and that your shoulders and legs will get a workout whether you want them to or not. The most effective and influential pop songs are the ones that bypass all of your conditioned defenses and take control of your body.

Cover of Junior WalkerJr. Walker and The All Stars performed "What Does It Take?" and created a soul classic of epic proportions. 

It is a mixture of wonderfully harmonized vocals (in thirds) and fabulously razzy, funky, soulful sax instrumentals.  Walker's sax sings and almost cries out for mercy in the upper register.

This song has an absolutely unique signature bass line (going from 5 to 1 / going from the fifth to the root instead of the straight ahead "root on one" that typifies so many songs) which is beautifully suspenseful... anticipatory off-balance with a syncopated feel to it. The vocals are crying-down-on-your-knees and heart wrenching.

The tune, with its bass intro and distinctively melodic saxophone riff has been a sacred break song (between sets, between jockeys, or before cutting over to commercials) on radio shows for more than 40 years -- and is still going strong today.

During the vocal, listen to the part where one of the two vocalists speaks out (looking toward the sax), "gonna blow for you, baby." So much passion in a jam of only three chords.

Recorded live in the studio without any tricks, overdubbing or over-production. Just some real soul men singing straight from the heart, begging for a woman to defrost and hand over the keys to her love..."
